How to Set Inspiring New Year Resolutions

It is that time of the year when people tend to make New Year resolutions. I also used to make them. But I decided back in 2009 to stop making New Year resolutions.

The main reason I stopped making resolutions was because I never accomplished what I set out to do. The resolutions just get lost and never done. I used to make a list of things I would like to do by the end of the year. Come February or March, I had forgotten that list and fall back to my old ways. This use to leave me demotivated.

This is not to say setting New Year resolutions is not good. It is good to see how people believe they can empower and develop themselves. The down side is when resolutions, for whatever reasons, are not followed through.

Instead of setting New Year resolutions just for the sake of it, I’ve decided to look out for inspirations. Inspirations because they motivate me to pursue my goals. I look out for people who inspire me.

I do not look for inspiration from those who are beneficiaries of trust funds, or those who are politically connected, celebrities, media personalities, corporate achievers etc. I look for inspirations from ordinary people just like myself. I have decided to look at people who work hard to achieve their goals with no financial help and big name back-ups.

Today I would like to share with you who inspires me to work towards my goal. The purpose is to make you think about what inspires you?

All these people who I have selected have one thing in common, they have set a goal for themselves and worked hard at achieving their goals. What inspires me most about them is that they have followed their dreams without fear. Their achievement does not threaten me, instead it inspires me.

For me, it is all about understanding what it takes to get where they are. I understand their struggles. When these people say to me “you can do it” I believe them.

The people I have listed below are those that inspire me to achieve my goals. They are my friends and family members. I have listed them not in any particular order.

Silindile wrote and self-published her first novel before the age of 25. Her romantic novel is called “Love-Coloured Glasses”. Established writers and novice writers alike will tell you how hard it is to complete a manuscript and get it published. Writing in any form is a considerable undertaking. She has made it and that is what inspires me about her.

Rachel is a seasoned baker. Running her part-time home based business baking cakes for birthdays, baby showers and weddings. She has recently expanded her business to include weddings and party decorations. Passion and love for what she does has made her successful. When you want to see a mix of passion and talent in action, you should see her doing her work and the finished product.

Livhuwani. He is the owner of Mvelelo, a company specialising in organising children’s parties based in Thohoyandou. Who said only women multi task? Livhuwani has proven that men can also multi-task. He also offers computer training to young people. He has won multiple awards for his work with young people. He continues to expand his business through exploring other ventures, such as providing an ablution facility service to the construction industry. Livhuwani is a hard worker who is not scared to take risks.

Khatshi, this girl did what many black people still call white people’s thing. On her travels she calls herself the #TheSoloWanderer. She took a giant leap to go on a road trip through Africa, traveling from Cape to Cairo. This is not a feat for the faint hearted, especially if you are a 25 years old, female and travelling alone. It is a bold step that requires confidence and no fear. Just knowing that she is out there traveling through Africa inspires me.

Una, is the owner and founder of Una’s Bridal House in Centurion. I got to know about Una through a pamphlet advertising her wedding expo, and to this day I have never met her personally. She hosted the first ever Bridal and Events Expo in Thohoyandou. The event was a resounding success. If this is not something to get inspired by, then I am not sure what qualifies as an inspiration. Una is such an inspiration, a very good example to other young people that they should become entrepreneurs.

My mother. She learnt to use a sewing machine at shoe factory in Shayandima near Thohoyandou. When the factory closed she bought her own sewing machine and started sewing minwenda. These are traditional Venda attire for women.

Her business was so successful that her clients not only included ordinary customers but it included actresses, celebrities and politicians. She was successful without using social media for publicity. Only word of mouth. She now in her retirement. Even in her retirement some people still want her to make these beautiful colourful creations for them. Below are some of her creations.

Look around you. Within your own family, your community who inspires you? What do they do?

When looking for people to inspire you, do not be concerned about their age. When it comes to inspiration, age is irrelevant.
